Air filter as the first stage for compressor control the dust entry from the sucked air. It prevent the dust into the air oil separator tank. This makes the separator work properly and longer time. Too much dust will make separator disfuctional immediately or make the lubricant decay .
Normally there is a air intake valve ,when the air ends starts ,this valve let in the air and filters through the air filter. Normally is outside in and inside out style, Soem design is inside in and outside out style.

Shut down the compressor before maintenance.
Take out the used air filter, and clean the inside of the housing or covered area by hand.
Fit a new air filter into place.
